About
My name is Chloe Pontes and I am a sophomore History & Art History double major at Berry College. I created this website on October 28th, 2020 for my History of Rock & Roll class. I first used "the Rolling Stones 10 Best Protest Songs of All Time" to find the songs I wanted to use. I then divided them into their respective movements and analyzed them within that context. The two major inspirations behind much of the 20th century protest music were the Vietnam War and Civil Rights Movement. Because of their prominence, I decided to focus on the two. I gave a brief summary of the conflicts that led the Americans to protest, and analyzed two major songs from each movement. For the Vietnam War "Born in the USA" and "What's Goin' On" were the major anthems of the movement and are why I chose them. "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and "A Change is Gonna Come" encompass the Civil Rights Movement and were greatly influential, which is why I chose them. Other important protest songs, of the same movements and others, are also mentioned in the List of Influential Protest Music tab. As an analytical feature I chose to incorporate a map of each protest song mentioned. As for interactive features, each set of lyrics has links on the words that open up a deeper analysis, and every song is accompanied by their respective video. The map is also an interactive feature. I hope you enjoyed learning about some of these songs and movements!
